Beyond Trauma: Neurobiology, Epigenetics, and Health Justice

Beyond Trauma has become my most requested class. I now hold this class in Portland annually and across the Pacific Northwest by request.

This is a one day workshop focused on building a greater understanding of trauma and liberatory health for change makers, activists, healers and clinicians. This trauma primer covers the basics of trauma and beyond.

We’ll review the current theories and understandings of emotional (as well as cultural, historical, systemic and ontological) trauma. Participants will come to understand the primary contributors and the major investigations in the realm of trauma. We will follow the physiological narrative of traumatic experiences centered within neuroscience, with special attention paid to the epigenetic processes. Each of these aspects will be placed within the context of radical public health and structural violence. The physiology of oppression (and privilege) will be reviewed. Clinical and community interventions will be covered, including herbal, naturopathic and allopathic. We’ll wrap up our day with a focus meaningful self-care and trauma stewardship.

What People Are Saying

“Lydia somehow makes the neurobiology of trauma really fun and really easy to understand. I was [originally] intimidated but I left feeling energized”

– Anonymous Student, 2015

“I had a strong appreciation for how much physiology was in the class, specifically within an anti-oppression context, which is widely underrepresented in trauma courses. I've been to so many over the last decade where trauma was only ever represented as a climatic experience, rather than a continuum so many people face”

– Clara Bella Story Parnell, Herbalist, LMT, Medicine Maker

"Lydia is an amazing, dynamic teacher who is teaching cutting-edge material about trauma. Taking her class turned ideas I had about trauma work on its head"

— Elissa Mendenhall, ND
